Can an Eyelid Lift Improve Appearance?

You need your eyes to see the world around you, and they play an important role in interpersonal communication and self-perception. How your eyes look also impacts your self-image and self-confidence. Under-eye bags and drooping eyelids can affect your self-esteem.

What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids. Sagging eyelids and baggy under-eye areas can leave you looking tired, uninterested, or angry.

Eliminating excess skin and fat pockets and tightening the skin around the eyes can rejuvenate the area and make you look more rested and youthful.

During surgery, Dr. Morimoto makes precise incisions along the natural lines of the eyelids, which helps minimize scarring and achieve the goal of removing excess, sagging skin. She can also remove fat tissue.

What to Expect During and After Surgery

The incision for eyelid surgery is typically made in areas that are not easily visible. During surgery, excess fat can be removed or redistributed, and excess skin is removed. After the procedure, you will spend some time in the recovery room while your vital signs are monitored.

Blepharoplasty is typically a day surgery, so you will be able to go home on the same day, but you will need someone to drive home. After surgery, you can temporarily experience light sensitivity, double vision, swelling, bruising that looks like a black eye, watery eyes, or blurred vision from the lubricating ointment.

After surgery, you will receive postoperative instructions that should be carefully followed to reduce the risk of complications, including infection. It’s important not to do anything strenuous for at least a week, including exercise or lifting anything heavy. Other precautions may include not wearing contact lenses for a short period or taking any drug or herbal supplement that can thin your blood and increase the risk of bleeding, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or Naproxen sodium (Aleve). Dr. Morimoto will tell you when to return to the office for a follow-up visit.

After blepharoplasty surgery, many people report feeling like they look younger and more rested, which increases their self-confidence. It is difficult to estimate how long the surgery results will last for you. Some people find the results last a lifetime, and for others, excess skin can recur.
